The online Bachelor of Science in Health Science is structured to meet common graduate school prerequisite courses like Anatomy & Physiology, Statistics, and Medical Terminology. However, Pre-Professional concentrations are not available online, and students are guided to select electives strategically for graduate readiness. Many graduate programs require additional lab-intensive courses such as Chemistry. Students who plan to apply to graduate school are recommended to carefully review graduate school admissions requirements to ensure that they are taking courses that meet those requirements.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Critical Thinking and Research Skills: Students will learn to apply critical and scientific inquiry to identify and evaluate health-related issues prevalent in today’s society. From this inquiry, students will identify a gap in the literature, design and conduct a research project to solve a pressing health care issue. (Assess through PUBH 430).
Healthcare Systems and Practices: Students will develop an understanding of the current U.S. and global healthcare systems and foster a vision to bring forth healthcare reform. (Assess through PUBH 101, PUBH 401)
Ethical and Legal Responsibilities: Students will apply ethical principles and legal responsibilities to foster effective interventions in the delivery of healthcare. (Assess through PUBH 430, PHIL 212).
Health Promotion and Disease Prevention: Students will promote preventative actions and health behaviors to optimize health and wellness across the lifespan. (Assess through PUBH 101,PUBH 202, PUBH 110).

Yes. Both the Associate of Science and the Bachelor of Arts in General Studies are offered fully online through the Division of Professional Studies, allowing flexible scheduling for working adults or high school students.

Yes, if your Saint Francis major has elective credits or there are specific courses that meet your five years or more of related experience, you may apply for credit for prior learning, in which a Saint Francis faculty member reviews your experience and credentials for potential credit. Credit for prior learning is a great program to bring in your work experience for credit.

Absolutely. If you provide your unofficial transcripts to our enrollment advisor, they will have our transfer credit evaluator complete a transfer credit evaluation. We can look at one or even a couple of majors that interest you.

Yes. ��Ƶ accepts older credits for many programs, especially those transferring into our online programs. As long as your prior school is accredited, we can accept those credits. We are very transfer-credit friendly and want to maximize your prior credits. In fact, we can transfer up to 98 credits.

The SFU PCT Program is designed to equip students with the knowledge required to gain the Patient Care Technician Certification through the National Center for Competency Testing's NCPCT exam.
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are prepared to perform a wide range of clinical and administrative tasks, including positions in a hospital, clinic, doctor's office, or healthcare facility.
Function effectively as a member of the health care team by exhibiting soft-skills expectations of an allied health care professional.

Patient Care Technician (PCT) Program – FAQs

General Program Information

Patient Care Technician is a healthcare professional trained to provide basic patient care under the supervision of nurses and physicians. PCTs assist with vital signs, mobility, personal hygiene, blood draws, EKGs, and other essential duties in hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics.

Our program follows a stackable credential model that allows students to earn college credit, prepare for national certification, and transition into healthcare careers or advanced nursing education. Our program allows PCT graduates to sit for the NCCT PCT exam which permits students to work as Level II PCTs. We partner with healthcare facilities to provide clinical experience and employment pathways. We offer two types of program cohorts - one for high school students and another for adult learners in the community. Inquire for more information!

Program Structure & Curriculum

The program runs approximately 6–8 months, depending on the cohort schedule and includes classroom, lab, and clinical components. It is a hybrid program with learning material presented online, monthly visits to the simulation lab, and clinical site experiences. We will work with your schedule.

Basic nursing care and ADLs
Phlebotomy and EKG skills
Vital signs and patient monitoring
Communication and documentation
Ethics and professionalism

Yes, the program aligns with the standards of recognized credentialing bodies and offers eligible students the opportunity to sit for national certification exams.

Clinical Requirements

Yes. Students complete supervised clinical rotations at partnering healthcare facilities to gain hands-on experience in real patient care settings.

Yes. Students must have updated immunizations and a clear background check before beginning clinicals.

Costs & Financial Aid

Tuition is $5,000 and includes instruction, lab access, and clinical placement, scrubs, stethoscope, textbook, exam fee, etc.
The tuition for a CNA who waives the first 4 classes is $2,995.
(Cost is based on 25/26 tuition rates.)

Yes! We partner with select hospitals that offer full tuition coverage in exchange for a one-year employment commitment. Other financial aid options may also be available.

Certification & Career Path

Students are eligible to take a nationally recognized Patient Care Technician certification exam (e.g., National Center for Competency Testing-NCCT) upon program completion.

Graduates work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, dialysis centers, home health, and outpatient clinics. Many use their PCT experience to pursue nursing or allied health degrees.

Start your journey into the medical field ahead of your peers! This unique program offered through partnering high schools allows students to finish the curriculum shortly after graduation, helping them quickly transition into the workforce. Ask your guidance counselor if your school is participating. Interested school districts can contact our staff to discuss future possibilities.

Earn college credits while in high school.
Courses 1 & 2 (60 hours) can be completed while in high school.
Courses 3 through 6 can be taken once you turn 18 and have completed high school.

How it works: You can take Course 1: Role of the Patient Care Technician and Course 2: Foundations of Allied Health during your senior year of school (or transfer courses if equivalent). Following high school graduation, you can take: Safety and Infection Control, Introduction to Direct Patient Care Skills, Advanced Direct Patient Care Skills, Phlebotomy and Electrocardiography.
